Prehistoric Native American Nodena Effigy Pottery Bottle - Rare Prehistoric Native American Mississippian Period Nodena (early Quapaw) Effigy Pottery Bottle from Mississippi County, Arkansas. Description: A Nodena fine ware pottery bottle with a flared rim, and decorated with 4 evenly spaced effigy face appliquéd nodes in the middle of a globular body. Each applied round face node has punctured eyes and mouth with a raised nose. The vessel is tempered with finely ground shell, and almost appears untempered. The bottle is slipped with black, likely graphite based paint. Appears to be an earlier form of the later large effigy vessels depicting human heads. Location: Mississippi County, Arkansas. Upper Nodena Site Area. Date / Period: 1400-1650 A.D. Approx. Size: 6” H x 5” Diameter (with 2.5” rim diameter). Provenance: Ex. Bill Rowlett Collection.
