De Bordeaux] | Ink on Vellum | Measures approximately 8” W x 12” H | Some backing attached | A rare and valuable historical document In 1691, France had fought two years of the Nine Years War (1689–97), and several battles in 1691 had ended in stalemate (although the French claimed victory) including the Siege of Mons (March – April 1691), Siege of Cuneo (June 1691), and the Battle of Leuze (September 1691). This Broadside is authorizing, among other things, a celebration for the returning French soldiers. Louis d'Anglure de Bourlemont (* 1617 ; † November 9, 1697 in Bordeaux ) was a French lawyer, diplomat and Archbishop of Bordeaux (from 1680 to 1697). Louis came from a famous, noble family in Champagne. He was the seventh son of Claude d'Anglure, Baron de Bourlemont and Prince of Amblise in Hainaut. His brother Charles-François was also a bishop, including Archbishop of Toulouse (1650–1657). On January 6, 1664, Louis XIV appointed him royal plenipotentiary to the Holy See , which meant that he had to perform various diplomatic tasks at the papal court for France .
