Kvittel and Handwritten Letter by the Author of Da'at Sofer of Pressburg
* Typewritten letter on the official stationery of the Shevet Sofer-Pressburg yeshivah in Jerusalem, signed in the hand of the gaon Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, author of Chashav Sofer of Pressburg. Addressed to the gaon Rabbi Yosef Adler, Av Beit Din of Turda. Lengthy [8-line] addition in the margins of the letter handwritten and signed by the gaon's father, Rabbi Akiva Sofer, author of Da'at Sofer of Pressburg. Jerusalem, 1956.* The author of Da'at Sofer added a kvittel [note for salvation] on a leaf from a notepad. He wrote his name and his wife's name on it (by hand), with a request for complete healing ["לרפואה שלמה"]. It is interesting to note that despite the fact that the gaon Rabbi Akiva Sofer did not conduct himself with Chassidic customs, before us is a kvittel that he wrote.
Rabbi Akiva Sofer [1878-1959], author of Da'at Sofer, was the fourth link in the golden family chain of the Chatam Sofer of Pressburg. He was the last rabbi of Pressburg, Hungary. He was selected to serve as president of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis, an association which encompassed over 300 Orthodox communities throughout Hungary. As a successor of the Chatam Sofer - the leader of Hungarian Jewry, he was treated royally in Pressburg, but upon arriving in the Land of Israel, when he disembarked in Haifa, he declared before those who came to greet him, "At this time I am casting all the respect and honor I had abroad into the sea, and from this day forward I want to be among the simple Jews of Jerusalem." Despite this, he reestablished the Pressburg yeshivah in Jerusalem, and was simultaneously president of Kollel Shomrei HaChomot and Batei Ungarin in Jerusalem, as well as serving as a member of the Council of Torah Sages. His disciples included the gaon Rabbi Shmuel HaLevi Wosner, author of Shevet HaLevi.
Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer was the author of Chashav Sofer and the eldest son of the Da'at Sofer. He was his father's successor as Av Beit Din and rosh yeshivah of Pressburg.
