Tzla"ch. Copy that Belonged to Rabbi Dov Ber Dushinsky of Namiestów, with his Signature
Tzla"ch - Tziyun L'Nefesh Chayah, novellae on tractates Berachot and Pesachim, with separate title pages, by Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, author of Noda BiYehudah. Zolkiew, 1825.
There is a self-dedication by Rabbi Dov Ber Dushinsky, rabbi of Namiestów. There is an interesting handwritten comment on leaf 12.
Rabbi Dov Ber Dushinsky [1838-1922] was the Ktav Sofer's beloved disciple. He gave him rabbinic ordination with a recommendation citing the verse: "ב"ד קדש ילבש" - ["He shall put on sanctified white linen"], with ב"ד being an abbreviation for Ber Dushinsky. He was son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Yechezkel Reich, rabbi of Banowitz, and starting in 1867, rabbi of Namiestów. He became famous throughout Hungary and even in distant Galicia, from where letters with halachic inquiries were sent to him. Everywhere he lived, he established a yeshivah for elite young men, and he would say, "The role of a rabbi is to study and to teach, only these, and not to endlessly write books." When he was 84 years old, he wrote in a letter to his son: "There is a leaf sticking out of the bookshelf, and who knows if it will still be sticking out next year." He was hinting at his own mortality by referring to ד"ף - (with דף having the numerical value of 84), and his hint came to be realized. He passed away quietly that year, without any illness. (Refer to: HaChatam Sofer V'Talmidav p. 486.) Material about this lot is included.
