Nechpah B'Kesef. First Edition. Pedigree Copy. Dedication and Glosses
Pri M'Pri and Nechpah B'Kesef Part II - responsa and novellae by Rabbi Yonah Navon. R' Yisrael Bek press, Jerusalem, 1843. Among the first books printed in Jerusalem. (Sh. HaLevi Sifrei Yerushalayim HaRishonim 13).
This book was brought to print by the author's grandson, Rabbi Binyamin Mordechai Navon, Ra"avad of Jerusalem, with a lengthy foreword by him. The first part was printed in the author's lifetime, about 100 years after the part before us. The reason this part was printed so much later was because this work Pri M'Pri includes solutions to some difficulties raised by the Ohr HaChaim in his book Pri Toar on the content of the book Pri Chadash. There is a warning by the Ohr HaChaim for whoever criticizes him with respect to these halachahs. There were indeed those who criticized him, but they hesitated to print their criticisms - so it was that this book was printed only many years later.
There is a lengthy, signed dedication by the publisher, kabbalist Rabbi Binyamin Mordechai Navon - Ra"avad of Jerusalem, on the title page in Oriental script: "מנחה היא שלוחה מאתי נכדו של הרב המחבר זיע"א למעלת הגביר החכם...סי' הלל בכר מנוח נר"ו.... כיר"א הצעיר בנימין מרדכי נבון ס"ט" "This is a gift from me, the author's grandson, in praise of the benefactor ... Hillel Becher Manoach ... the youth, Binyamin Mordechai Navon S"T"
There is a lengthy scholarly gloss written and signed by Rabbi Rephael Yitzchak Yisrael of Rhodes on leaf 126: "Look into my book V'Zot HaBerachah ... completed here in Rhodes 1849, by the youth Rephael Yitzchak Yisrael, great-grandson and grandson of Rabbi Moshe Yadbar, z"l, son of the great rabbi, author of Kol Eliau and other books, son of the great Rabbi Mas'et Moshe, z"l."
The author, Rabbi Yonah Navon [1713-1760] was one of the great sages of Jerusalem and author of the book Get Mekushar. He was the primary rabbi of two of the generation's leaders: Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azoulay (the Chid"a) and Mahari"t Elgazi. He served as adjudicator in the Rishon L'Tziyon Rabbi Yitzchak HaKohen Rapoport's rabbinical court. He is a signatory on a number of regulations for Jerusalem such as the modesty of women's dress, the prohibition against playing cards (1754), and others. His disciple, the Chid"a, wrote about him that "there has almost never been an adjudicator like him in our region; he was pious and a kabbalist."
Rabbi Binyamin Mordechai Navon [1788-1852] was a gaon and kabbalist. He was one of the leaders of the Beit-El community for many years, and Ra'avad of Jerusalem. Due to his tremendous humility, he refused to serve as Rishon L'Tziyon. He was rosh yeshivah in a number of yeshivahs in Jerusalem, including Beit Aharon, Chessed L'Avraham and Binyan Shlomo. He passed away in 1852. (Otzar HaRabbanim: 8881.) More material about him is included with this lot.
Rabbi Rephael Yitzchak Yisrael [1809-1892] was the chief rabbi of Rhodes. He ascended to the Land of Israel at an advanced age, where he was appointed Av Beit Din of the Sephardim. Members of his Beit Din included Chacham Yosef Nissim Burla and Chacham Ya'akov Shimon Matalon. He authored Beit HaYayin (Izmir 1883), Pitchei Teshuvah (Vienna, 1888), as well as other works which remained in manuscript. His halachic rulings and essays were brought in many books, including: Pitchei Teshuvah by Chacham Chizkiyahu Shem Tov; Mateh Lechem by Chacham Rephael Chaim Faranji; in Chacham Chaim Palagi's book as well as those of his son, Avraham Palagi; in the books Kevod Ya'akov, Sha'arei Rachamim, VaYeshev Yosef. His novellae were published in Torah periodicals including Torah MiTziyon, HaMeasef and others. (Refer to Arzei HaLevanon 1962 for more about him.)
