Ancient manuscript. Rabbi Saadia Gaon’s translation of the Books of Lamentations and Job – Yemen, 17th century

Handwritten manuscript, Saadia Gaon’s translation of the Books of Lamentations and Job into Judeo-Arabic. [Yemen, 17th century]. Each verse is followed by its Judeo-Arabic translation. The text is punctuated with upper cantillation marks.

The manuscript features ancient writing characteristic of the 17th century.
Rabbi Saadia Gaon, born in Egypt and active in Babylon during the 9th century, was the first to write a commentary and translation of the Bible. His translation was composed in Judeo-Arabic—a spoken Arabic dialect with a Jewish inflection written in Hebrew letters. Saadia’s commentary reflects his deep familiarity with both Hebrew and Arabic, ensuring a faithful and precise translation of each word. Over time, the meanings of words in both Hebrew and Arabic have naturally evolved, making his work a critical linguistic and theological resource.
[234] written pages. 16 cm.
Good condition. The first and last pages of the manuscript have been skillfully restored. The first page is partially missing text. The Book of Job is in very good condition but lacks several pages at the end. Bound in an old leather binding with leather clasps.
