Fascinating Letter to the Minister David Sassoon from R' Menachem Mendel of Kaminetz, Professionally Designed. Jerusalem, 1872

Lengthy and historic letter from Jerusalem emissary and activist R' Menachem Mendel Kaminetz, sent to the famous minister and philanthropist Rabbi David Sassoon. Jerusalem, 1872. The letter is lavishly designed by an artist. Several words are written in gilt ink.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel's daughter was married to the philanthropist Aharon Gabbai Sassoon, a friend of R' David Sassoon's. In 1870, his son-in-law encountered trouble, much to the family's dismay. Rabbi Menachem Mendel appealed to David Sassoon in desperation to come to the rescue of his son-in-law, which the latter did. In this letter, Rabbi Menachem Mendel emotionally expresses his appreciation to Rabbi David Sassoon for his action. "... You have revived our spirits with your attention to salvation and mercy, and the great news we have received regarding the welfare of my daughter and son-in-law and their dear family. For quite some time we did not know what was happening with them. Our hearts melted, our spirit was depressed and there was no breath left in us. Now our hearts are joyous and our spirits celebrate upon hearing they are well. This is my consolation - brought about by yourself, Baruch Hashem!

Signed at the conclusion of the letter: Menachem Mendel son of R' Aharon ... Kaminetz, Ish Yerushalayim ..." Written in Ashkenazic script and in Rash"i script. His son Eliezer then added several lines in his hand and with his signature.

Discussion of this letter with a historic expansion is available in Prakim B'Toldot Yehudei Bavel Part II, pp. 391-396. Listed in Ohel David Part II, p. 1057.
