Halachic Letter Handwritten by the 'Aruch LaNer' to his Son-in-Law, the Av Beit Din of Bad Kissingen

Lengthy, important and interesting halachic letter, including an unknown halachic responsum by the "Aruch LaNer" - a practical halachah regarding dreams. The entire letter [approximately 200 words] is handwritten by the renowned gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Yukab Ettlinger, author of Aruch LaNer. It was sent to his son-in-law, the gaon Rabbi Moshe Aryeh HaLevi Bamberger, rabbi of Bad Kissingen [Altona, 19th century].

The Aruch LaNer opens his interesting letter with the words "To my precious son-in-law, the rabbi ..." The first part of the letter is a halachic responsum regarding kilei begadim asked on behalf of his son-in-law's brother.

However, the second half of the letter deals with an extremely important and interesting additional question, deliberated by many poskim - and this is the clear and unknown (to the best of our examination) determination by the author of Aruch LaNer. The question was asked by his son-in-law, in the name of another brother, the gaon Rabbi Simchah HaLevi Bamberger, av beit din of Aschaffenburg. The content of the question is as follows: When a person fasts after a bad dream, does he have to fast immediately following the dream (from the middle of the night), or does the fast start at dawn, as for other fasts? This question is critical for those who are concerned about bad dreams and fast as a result of them. The Aruch LaNer answers clearly and decisively, and inter alia refers to his book: "In my book, Aruch LaNer in Sukkah, page 43a (in

that book), where the comment starts with "There in the gemara ..."

Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of the gaon Rabbi Ya'akov Yukab Ettlinger.

[1] leaf, [14] lines, approximately 200 words. 21.5x14 cm. The responsum is entirely handwritten by the Aruch LaNer.
