Szeged (Hungary) Community Burial Society Ledger. Szeged, 1897. Rare

Elegant ledger, printed on shiny paper, with the Szeged Community Burial Society annual report for 1897. Szeged (Hungary), 1898. Hungarian with words and terms in Hebrew. Rare; not found in the National Library's collection.

This ledger includes financial reports with very detailed lists of income and expenses. List of the names of the deceased that year, and where they were buried. The gabba'im added handwritten comments in the name list.

Szeged, in the south of Hungary, was a large and important community. The burial society was founded in 1787 to bury the deceased. For many years, the cemetery was inside the city. In 1868, a new cemetery was inaugurated outside the city, and all the graves were transferred from the old cemetery to the new one. The chevrah kaddisha focused on other charitable activities as well, including establishing a hospital in Szeged in 1856.

16 pp, 30.5 cm. High-quality paper. Printed ledger. Hebrew and Hungarian. Handwritten supplements. Very fine condition. Original jacket cover.
