Rom und Jerusalem. First Edition. Leipzig, 1862

Rom und Jerusalem: die letzte Nationalitaetsfrage: Letters and Notes, [Rome and Jerusalem: the Last Question of Nationality] by Moshe Hess. German with some Hebrew. Leipzig, 1862. First edition.

In this book, Hess describes an entire Zionist doctrine: He opposes assimilation, and calls on Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel and the return of the Jewish masses to working life. The ideal of returning the Jews to their Land is, in his eyes, a global ideal, and not just a Jewish one. Hess had difficulty finding a publisher for his work, but in 1862 he succeeded in publishing it in Leipzig. He writes that the Damascus blood libel influenced his nationalist outlook: "I was reminded that I am a son of a lowly and despicable people, mad and persecuted ... and then the desire to fight for my people and its national resurrection grew in me, even though I had already moved away from it!"
