Printed Parochet [!] A Gift from the Jewish Museum in Prague. Prague, 1899
Large, square silk Parochet. Star of David embroidered with gold thread. The parochet is decorated with Hebrew texts and pictures of ancient Jewish ritual vessels housed in the Prague Museum. All these decorations were delicately printed on the parochet with a unique technique. Prague 1899.
120:120 cm At the top of the parochet are the words:"זאת מתנת הח"ק לכבוד נ' שנים לבית ממכר זה ולכבוד המקום שנתן ודאג בקפידה והשגחה, את התשמישים הספרים ופרוכת לקשוט ההכלים (!) והחדרים דק"ק פראג הבירה".
("This is a gift from the Chevra Kadisha in honour of the 50th anniversary of this museum and in honor of the place that took special care of the vessels, books and curtains used to decorate the rooms in the holy community of Prague".)
The date 1899 is printed within the large Star of David.
Printed on the bottom of the parochet are illustrations of antique ritual vessels: Candlesticks, pomegranate for a Sefer Torah, spice box, and menorah. This is a unique parochet made for the museum in Prague. Printed in blue. The parochet itself is in fine condition. A few stains. Three small tears that can be repaired.
Printed cloth parochot are unusually rare. Bezalel Jerusalem also had a parochet — a flag printed on cloth. See "Shatz's Bezalel", p.18
