Letter from the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Uziel Regarding the Mikveh in the Nissan Beck Synagogue

Letter from the Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Ben Tziyon Meir Chai Uziel to the religious council in Jerusalem regarding closing the mikveh in the famous Tiferet Yisrael synagogue in the Old City, known by its name 'Nissan Beck.' Jerusalem, 1939.

When the letter was written, there was only one (!) mikveh in the Old City, the mikveh in 'Nissan Beck.' All the residents of the city used this mikveh every Friday for washing and ritual immersion. Due to the immense poverty in the city, the water would be changed only twice a year: On the eve of Yom Kippur and the eve of Passover. Apparently, the situation worsened to the point that there was a risk of its being closed. Rabbi Uziel protests the risky situation that the Old City could be left without any mikveh at all.

[1] leaf paper, 16x20 cm. Official stationery, typewritten, signed by the Rishon LeTziyon and with his handwritten corrections.

Fine condition. Filing perforations (torn). Fold marks and creases.
