Haggadat Ben-Chorin. Metz, 1767. First Illustrated Haggadah Printed in France - Passover Haggadah, Beit Chorin , with the Alshich's commentary, Gevurot Hashem and Ollelot Ephraim . Spectacular copperplates. Two title pages - the first of which is illustrated, by Moshe Metz/Joseph Antoine. Metz, 1767. As stated, this is the first illustrated haggadah printed in France. The printer, R' Moshe Metz, was forced to present the name of a non-Jewish printer on the title page of the haggadah due to government policy preventing Jews from receiving a license to open a printing house. Approbation from the renowned rabbi of Metz, the author of Sha'agat Aryeh , at the beginning of the haggadah, alongside other approbations. The laws are presented in Ladino and in German in Tze'enah U'Re'enah letters. Commentaries printed at the sides of the pages: HaAlshich HaKadosh , the Mahara”l's Gevurot Hashem , Ollelot Ephraim , the Abarbanel's commentary, and the Mateh Aharon commentary on ” Chad Gadyah. ” Large, spectacular illustrations appear along the haggadah's leaves, copperplates of the pictures by Avraham ben Ya'akov Hager in the famous Amsterdam Haggadah.
