Historic and Unique: Division of the Land: For or Against? - Letter from the Jewish Community in Jaffa and Tel Aviv to Rabbi Tukachinsky

Fascinating and historic document by Va'ad HaKehillah HaIvrit B'Yaffo V'Tel Aviv, appealing to Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky for his opinion of the halachah regarding dividing the Land.

When the first information was released about dividing the Land as recommended by the famous Peel Commission in the summer of 1937, R' Daniel Sirkis embarked on a propaganda campaign against it. He devoted a number of articles to this issue in the press, and also undertook serious action organizing the opposition to the idea of dividing the Land of Israel. The letters he received were published in his book Zekof HaKomah (Jerusalem 5737).

At first, Rabbi Daniel addressed the rabbis of the Land and public figures, and thus the question of the division of the land arose on the table of kings: The Zionist institutions turned to rabbis of the Yishuv HaYashan to voice their opinion on this matter!

The letter before us was sent by the Va'ad HaKehillah HaIvrit B'Yaffo V'Tel Aviv, as follows: "Religious Judaism, headed by its teachers and rabbis, must at this time tender its halachic opinion, as to whether the people of Israel are allowed and entitled to forgo some part of the Land ..."

A printed leaf is included with R' Michel's interesting response:

1. There is clearly no right to forgo part of the Land - just as it is impossible to change the boundaries of day and night, it is impossible to change the boundaries of the Land.

2. However: There is no reason to ask us, none of it is within our purview.

3. Even if we really are given an autonomous state, who will run it? The 'Left' runs all public institutions: "For 12 years it has only caused a spiritual upheaval in the Land of Israel. "It obscured the form of religion and desecrated the sacred in the Land of Israel. It conquered all the fortresses of Judaism and undermined their foundations. "Free" education is spreading, and traditional education is atrophying ... All this was done before we had a Jewish state - so what can we hope for with autonomous rule?"

[2] leaves. Approximately 28 cm. Original envelope included.

Fine-very fine condition. Slight aging stains. Slight peeling of one of the leaves.
