Carved Bone Implement - The first is a large mammal bone, possibly a tibia, meticulously hand-carved into a tapered implement. The proximal end retains the natural joint structure, while the shaft is decorated with incised geometric patterns including cross-hatching, zig-zag lines, and parallel grooves. The distal end has been worked into a sharp, elongated point. 14 3/4” L x 2” at the widest point. The carved bone, probably a mammal tibia, came home from the Benchleys’ 1987 National Geographic expedition to Papua New Guinea. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
