Teddy Tucker (1925–2014) was Bermuda’s legendary wreck diver, a self-taught authority on historic shipwrecks, coins, cannons and ceramics who was consulted by the Smithsonian. Peter met him in 1970 on a National Geographic assignment about Bermuda’s shipwrecks, spent six weeks diving with him, and the two became fast friends for life. Peter described Teddy as a walking encyclopedia: a master of every discipline having to do with the ocean and one of the great autodidacts in the history of conservation science and research. Their dives together became the raw material of The Deep. This is Tucker’s own map of the wrecks that ring Bermuda. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
