Pair of Neo-Grec Style Marble and Gilt Metal Tazze - Pair of 19th-century Neo-Grec style tazze or candle holders. Each piece is constructed from black marble or slate and red-veined marble with gilt-metal mounts. Each tazza features a shallow, circular black stone bowl supported by a turned gilt-metal pedestal. The pedestal is set upon a rectangular, multi-tiered base composed of alternating layers of black stone and red-veined marble. The black sections of the base are decorated with incised and gilded foliate and floral motifs. Each assembly is raised on four cast gilt-metal scroll feet featuring stylized acanthus leaf details. 9 3/4” H x 7 1/4” W x 4 1/4” D. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940–2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation.
