Early Chip Carved Polychrome Painted Wood Folk Art Dower Chest - Early chip-carved folk art dower chest. It is constructed of heavy wood planks with a traditional rectangular form. The exterior displays a polychrome painted surface in muted red and dark green tones. The front face is decorated with three registers including two large chip-carved pinwheel rosettes flanking a central carved cross. A repeating pattern of eight-pointed stars is carved into the corner stiles and the lower rail. The slightly overhanging lid opens on hand-wrought iron strap hinges to a dark-stained interior containing a lidded till. The chest is fitted with a decorative brass-toned metal lock plate. It is supported by block feet formed by the side panel extensions. 35” H x 60” W x 24” D.
