Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Mottahedeh Neoclassical

A Pair of Mottahedeh Neoclassical Style Gilded Black Basalt Lidded Urns - A pair of lidded urns produced by Mottahedeh. The vessels are crafted from a matte black stoneware, mimicking eighteenth-century black basalt, and feature extensive gilded relief decoration. Each urn has an ovoid body supported by a short pedestal foot on a square plinth. The Neoclassical ornamentation consists of gilded foliate swags connecting two types of medallions: one side depicts a profile portrait of a helmeted classical figure within a beaded border, and the reverse side features a smiling Bacchic mask. The lower portion of each urn is embellished with a band of gilded acanthus leaves. The removable, high-domed lids are decorated with gadrooned swirl patterns and topped with gilded pineapple finials. The underside of one plinth retains a gold foil label printed with the text A Mottahedeh design. 16” H x 7.5” W x 7.5” D. Location: 20C
