Late 19th Century Rococo Revival Majolica Nautilus Centerpiece Compote Attributed to Wilhelm Schiller and Son - This large earthenware centerpiece compote is executed in the Rococo Revival style and is attributed to the Oederan, Bohemia factory of Wilhelm Schiller and Son. The vessel is modeled as a nautilus shell with a molded basketweave exterior and ornate scrollwork borders. One end of the vessel features a high-relief bearded sea-god mask, while the other is adorned with a figure of a winged nereid or sea nymph. The shell is supported by a pedestal in the form of a large, scaly dolphin-like fish with flared fins and tail, which stands upon a square, stepped plinth base. The decoration consists of hand-painted polychrome glazes in a palette of pastel pink, pale yellow, and light blue, highlighted with hand-applied gilding throughout. The underside of the base bears an impressed four-lobed flower or rosette mark, the impressed numerals 1120, and the impressed letter P. A small, indistinct blue underglaze mark is also present near the foot. 23” H x 13” W x 7” D. Location: 6E
