Madang is a larger locality north of Kaup where Ledoux spent most of his time. Throughout Ledoux's Manuscript/Diaries (lot 108), and Field Notebooks (lot 110), he mentions these pulpul grass skirts, explaining when short ones are worn, when long ones are worn, and even the ancient tradition of pulpul tie-dying. Women and children wearing pulpul grass skirts can be seen in Ledoux's various photographs.
