Endangered Species
In 1983, Warhol created a portfolio of ten silkscreens entitled “Endangered Species”. This impressive series includes portraits of various endangered species such as the sea turtle, the black rhinoceros and the snow leopard. The series was created in response to the threat to these animals from climate change, pollution and the destruction of their habitats, and is still as relevant today as it was then.
The portfolio was released in the year of the tenth anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), a landmark law that seeks to provide federal funding and authority for conservation efforts.

An iconic animal portrait
The Siberian tiger is one of the most imposing motifs in this series. The artist's signature bright color palette is used to depict the mighty head of the animal, which is native to Russia and China. The animal is depicted in golden-brown colors with contrasting contours, enthroned in front of a dark green background. Its piercing blue eyes seem to look directly at the viewer, drawing attention to the urgency of the Endangered Species Act. Since the animal's portrait takes up the entire picture surface, it has a strong presence and an iconic character.
