Control Grip Yoke JU-88 A-4.
Steuerhorn Control Grip Yoke Junkers Ju88 A-4 Kapp Borthen, Svalbard.

You may be lucky and the only owner of an amazing andvery rare example of a WW2 German Luftwaffe Steuerhorn (Control Yoke/Grip), as only used on the Junkers Ju88 Bomber Aircraft.

This Control Yoke was mounted directly in-front of the pilot, and gave him complete control of the aircraft. Buttons attached were for Bomb Release (Left Button); Autopilot Control (Right Button/Switch); Radio Button (under the autopilot) and an unknown destination button (under the bomb button). The factory version has been converted by the pilot to his individual needs.

History: It was A German plane, a Junkers Ju 88A-4 (Jumo 211 J VS II) 4D+GS Werke Nummer (W.Nr): 1456 ( Works number) from Banak in northern Norway. He belonged to 8./III./KG 30 (Kampfgeschwader 30) Luftflotte 5.

Note: Various sources give erroneously a different plant number: WNr.2121

On September 14, 1942, as a result of damage (anti-aircraft artillery fire) after the attack on the Allied convoy PQ 18, the crew of the German Ju 88 was forced to make an emergency landing without the landing gear extended ("on the stomach") was only belly-landed on sandfloes near shore . The emergency landing took place in the vicinity Kapp Borthen-Svalbard.
None of the four crew members were hurt during the landing. Pilot (the man who held that Control Grip Yoke) F Ofw. Paul Fullborn, B Uffz. Wilhelm Mietz, BF Uffz.Meinhard Spielberg and Ofw. BS Siegfried Matschke.

The crew partially blew up the plane (plane was engulfed in fire, as evidenced by the remnants of molten rubber visible in one photo).

Two days later, they were found by a He 111 search plane and were instructed to move north to Sonak base.
They arrived at the Sonak base after a day's march. After the evacuation from Spitsbergen, the entire crew was sent to the Mediterranean Sea. Less than two months later, their plane was shot down over North Africa and the entire crew was killed.

Fun fact: This info comes from Luftwaffe 6. Abt. losses and explains. From the report of the pilot of a German reconnaissance plane: ..."mis/ret uninjured in i/24.09.42)(rep A4 1456 in losses 127v19.09.42, amd as 2121( here was a number error) in losses i/24.09.42 and crew ret allright as the machine was only belly-landed on sandfloes near shore; burned but was abandoned - Wreck about 60% on site, showing 'signs of, unit crest under pilot window !)

Steuerhorn Control Grip Yoke Ju88 A-4 was dismantled from the wreckage of planes by one member from a scientific expedition at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. Now, after his death, the item has entered our auction. I wrote as much as I could. A wonderful item with an even greater story. Let it go into the hands of a real collector and let him spark his imagination. Mine aroused amazingly.
