Polish Profesor of Plant Genetics 1890 - 1975 Documents - A collection of over 60 documents of the Polish professor of plant genetics Stefan Lewicki (1890 - 1975) . The documents are mainly evidence of the professor's academic career. Some of them concern private matters. Many of them bear the signatures of the president, prime ministers and deputy prime ministers of the Polish government both before and after World War II. Stefan Lewicki graduated from the University of St. Vladimir in Kiev in 1915, as evidenced by the relevant diploma with the number 16469. In 1917 he completed a course at the same university and obtained the title of agronomist. It is confirmed by a beautiful document (number 1518 in the records of the university) on parchment. Several certificates of scholarship and work in a chemical laboratory come from this period. In 1917, he was allowed to lecture at a Polish school in Kiev on the name of Higher Polish Scientific Courses, which is confirmed by two existing documents in the collection. On December 9, 1918, he received an ID issued by the Polish Representation in Ukraine, Military Department. As an assistant at the Kiev Polytechnic, he was discharged from military service. On December 14, 1918, he received a Polish passport (a very rare document). After the end of World War I, Stefan Lewicki returns to Poland. He works at the National Research Institute of Rural Farms in Puławy, where he becomes the head of the Plant Breeding Department. In 1925 he obtained a doctorate in agronomy at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. During this period, he received several letters from the Ministry of Agriculture signed by other minitres, including Władysław Kiernik and Nakoniecznikow-Klukowski. In 1937, he received a letter of praise signed by General Zając for his work for the air defense of the Polish state. In 1938, he was awarded a medal for many years of service. In 1948, Stefan Lewicki was appointed professor. This is evidenced by a document signed by the President of Poland Bolesław Bierut, Prime Minister Józef Cyrankiewicz, and the Minister of Education. In 1957, he receives another document from the Prime Minister of the Polish government, Piotr Jaroszewicz. Stanisław Lewicki received a number of decorations and medals: 1. Meritorious Agricultural Worker, 1971, 2. Commemorative medal ”Science in the service of the nation”, 3. Gold badge of the farmers' circle, 1948, 4. Commemorative badge for merits for the Polish Automobile Club, 1950.
