German 1939 Commemorative Postcard ”50. Geburtstag des Fuehrers” with Winterhilfswerk Stamp - A commemorative postcard produced for the 50th birthday of Adolf Hitler in 1939, printed with the dates 1889-1939 and the caption ”50. Geburtstag des Fuehrers”. The card's border is illustrated with circular vignettes of German cities and towns including Berlin, Muenchen, Wien, Nuernberg, Braunau, Eger, Saarbruecken and Memel, each labeled beneath its image. Affixed to the card is a 3 Pfennig Winterhilfswerk charity stamp depicting a castle, cancelled with a special commemorative postmark reading ”20.4.1939 - 50. Geburtstag des Fuehrers - Deutsch das Memelland”. The reverse carries the printer's imprint ”Walter Goecks, Berlin W 62” and is otherwise blank for correspondence. The piece reflects the propaganda material produced around the annexation of the Memel territory in March 1939, coinciding with Hitler's birthday, linking the political event to the Winterhilfswerk winter relief charity program through the postal cancellation. Hitler's 50th birthday on 20 April 1939 was marked by extensive state-organised celebration across Germany, coinciding closely with the German annexation of the Memel territory from Lithuania in March 1939, a event this card explicitly commemorates through its ”Deutsch das Memelland” postmark. The towns depicted on its border, including Braunau (Hitler's birthplace), Eger, Saarbruecken and Memel, trace the territorial expansions and annexations associated with Nazi Germany up to that date. The Winterhilfswerk (Winter Relief Programme) was the NSDAP's annual charitable fundraising drive, ostensibly for the needy but also serving as a vehicle for public displays of loyalty and propaganda, with its stamps and collection items commonly issued alongside state occasions such as this one.
