German 1933 Propaganda Postcard - 'Unserm Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler zum Geburtstage' - A printed postcard commemorating a birthday, illustrated with crossed flags flanking a wreathed portrait bust, printed in Fraktur script beneath the heading ”Unserm Reichskanzler Adolf Hitler zum Geburtstage!” followed by a multi-verse poem signed ”Amalie Holzrichter.” The card carries the imprint ”Druck und Verlag Ewald Mattheis Hagen i.Westf.” along the left margin. It was used as a postal item, addressed to a ”Frau Mimi Heckmann” in Massen b. Unna, Bahnhofstr., bearing a franked stamp and postmark, with a handwritten personal message covering the remaining space. Postcards of this type were produced commercially in 1933 to mark the birthday of the newly appointed Reich Chancellor, combining nationalist verse with imagery referencing the political symbolism of the period, and were circulated through the ordinary postal system as shown by the stamp and cancellation present here. This postcard dates from 1933, the year Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor of Germany on 30 January, an event that prompted a wave of commercially produced commemorative ephemera celebrating him as national leader, including birthday cards of this kind timed to his 20 April birthday. Such items reflect the rapid normalisation of Hitler's cult of personality within everyday civilian life, with private publishers and printers producing patriotic verse and imagery for ordinary postal circulation rather than official state production. The use of Fraktur script and nationalist poetry was typical of the visual and rhetorical conventions through which Nazi symbolism was disseminated to the general public in the early months of the regime.
