Postcard ”Berghof, Wachenfeld” - Reichskanzler's House at Obersalzberg - A color printed postcard titled ”Berghof 'Wachenfeld' des Reichskanzlers Landhaus am Obersalzberg (Berchtesgaden)”, captioned in the lower margin as phot. H. Huber Nr. 8006. The image shows the alpine house with surrounding mountains and a lake in the distance. The reverse carries the printed heading ”Deutsche Heimatbilder”, a publisher's credit to Orig.-Aufn. v. Hans Huber, Alpiner Verlag, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the printed number ”Huber Postkarte Nr. 8006”, and a boxed ”Eine Huber Karte” mark alongside space for correspondence and address lines; a period of use is noted in a handwritten annotation referencing the years up to 1945 and a location identifier. The Berghof, originally a private residence known as Haus Wachenfeld, was located on the Obersalzberg above Berchtesgaden and became associated with the Reich Chancellor during the 1930s and 1940s. Postcards of this type were part of a wider commercial production of alpine and regional scenic views by the Huber Alpiner Verlag publishing house. Adolf Hitler acquired Haus Wachenfeld in the early 1930s, later enlarging it into the Berghof, which served as his private residence and a de facto seat of government where he received foreign dignitaries and conducted state business alongside NSDAP officials. The Obersalzberg complex surrounding it was expanded into a secondary seat of the regime, with residences for figures such as Martin Bormann and Hermann Goering nearby. Commercially produced postcards of the house, like this one from the Huber Alpiner Verlag, circulated widely as regional souvenir and propaganda imagery before the site was bombed by the RAF in 1945 and later demolished.
