German 1939 Reichsparteitag Nürnberg Commemorative Postcard - A pre-printed postal card issued for the 1939 Reichsparteitag rally at Nürnberg, held 2–11 September, with an integral 6 Reichspfennig postage stamp bearing a profile portrait. The front depicts a medallic design showing a seated female figure with a child, sheaves of grain, and grapes, surmounted by an eagle and wreathed swastika, with ”1939” and ”REICHSPARTEITAG” lettered around the rim, printed in white over a red ground beneath the title ”REICHSPARTEITAG NÜRNBERG 2.-11. SEPTEMBER”. The reverse is captioned ”Festpostkarte, Reichsparteitag des Friedens, Nürnberg 2.-11. September 1939” with printed distribution details for the NSDAP Zentralverlag, Franz Eher Nachfolger, München. The 1939 rally was billed as the ”Party Rally of Peace” (Reichsparteitag des Friedens), though it was ultimately cancelled following the outbreak of war on 1 September 1939; commemorative postal stationery of this kind had already been printed and issued in anticipation of the event. The Nuremberg rallies were the NSDAP's annual mass propaganda gatherings, staged from 1923 and, after 1933, held as vast choreographed spectacles combining party congresses, military displays and Hitler Youth and SA/SS parades to project the regime's power domestically and abroad. The 1939 rally, pre-billed as the ”Reichsparteitag des Friedens” to emphasise a public narrative of German peaceful intent, was to have followed the pattern of the preceding ”Rally of Greater Germany” (1938), but was cancelled outright when Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, precipitating the Second World War. Commemorative stationery, badges and publications for the event had already been produced by the party's central publishing house, Franz Eher Nachfolger, before the cancellation, making such items artefacts of a rally that never actually took place.
