German WWII War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) - A Third Reich era War Merit Cross Second Class with Swords, of cross-pattee form with crossed swords through the arms, one face bearing a central roundel with the mobile swastika device and the other dated 1939 within a wreathed roundel. The medal is in what appears to be a bronzed or gilt-toned base metal, suspended from its issue ribbon in the national colors of red, white, and black. This decoration was instituted in 1939 to recognize both military and civilian contributions to the German war effort, with the swords device denoting an award for actions under combat conditions. The War Merit Cross was instituted by Hitler in October 1939 as a wartime revival of an earlier Imperial-era decoration, intended to allow recognition of service and merit outside the combat conditions required for the Iron Cross. The version with swords was reserved for recipients whose contribution occurred under fire or in connection with direct combat operations, distinguishing it from the plain (swordless) award given for meritorious service on the home front or in administrative, medical, and industrial roles. It was awarded across the armed forces, party organisations, and civilian sectors throughout the war, making it one of the most widely distributed Third Reich decorations.
