Set of German DRL Sports Badges in Bronze - Two oval sports badges, each featuring an oak leaf wreath surrounding the interlaced ”DRL” monogram above a stylized ribbon, both finished in a tone appearing to be bronze. One example is maker-marked ”L. CHR. LAUER NÜRNBERG” with an accompanying RZM number, while the other bears the maker inscription ”WEIDMANN GEV” along with a DRGM registration number. The DRL (Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen) badge was awarded for achievement in state-organized athletic testing during the 1930s, with bronze, silver, and gold grades denoting the level attained; these badges were produced by numerous licensed firms, resulting in variation among examples such as this pair. These badges were issued by the Deutscher Reichsbund für Leibesübungen, the National Socialist state sports authority that from 1933 absorbed and coordinated German athletic organisations, replacing the earlier Weimar-era Deutsches Sportabzeichen system with its own standardized proficiency test. Candidates, both civilian and military, earned the award by meeting set standards in running, jumping, throwing and swimming disciplines, with bronze representing the entry-level grade beneath silver and gold. Manufacture was licensed to numerous private firms under RZM or DRGM registration, such as L. Chr. Lauer of Nuremberg, a long-established medal and badge maker, accounting for the stylistic variation seen among surviving examples.
