Set of Romanian WWII Campaign Medals - Romania Recunoscatoare and Crusade Against Communism - A set of Romanian medals from the Second World War period, comprising examples of the ”Romania Recunoscatoare” (Romania Grateful) medal and the ”Cruciada Impotriva Comunismului” (Crusade Against Communism) medal, each in more than one size and finish believed to be gilt and silvered metal. The medals bear raised inscriptions reading ROMANIA RECUNOSCATOARE and CRUCIADA IMPOTRIVA COMUNISMULUI, with the latter depicting a fist grasping a sword before a radiating cross. Several pieces retain portions of red moiré ribbon with vertical multicolor stripes. These decorations were issued to Romanian personnel who served on the Eastern Front alongside German forces during the campaign against the Soviet Union, reflecting the wartime political alignment of the Romanian state at the time of issue. These medals reflect Romania's participation as an Axis co-belligerent following Marshal Ion Antonescu's alignment with Nazi Germany from 1941, when Romanian forces joined the invasion of the Soviet Union to reclaim Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina and subsequently fought on into Soviet territory, including at Odessa and Stalingrad. The ”Crusade Against Communism” medal was awarded to those who took part in this anti-Soviet campaign, framed by Antonescu's regime as an ideological struggle against Bolshevism, while ”Romania Grateful” decorations similarly recognised wartime service and sacrifice on the Eastern Front. Romanian losses in this campaign were substantial, particularly during the Soviet counteroffensives of 1942–1943, before Romania switched sides in August 1944.
