Austrian Fahnenweihe Commemorative Badge, Militär-Vet.-Verein Neuda, 1910 - A shield-shaped commemorative badge issued for the flag consecration (Fahnenweihe) of the Militär-Veteranen-Verein Neuda, dated 22 May 1910. The face bears the Austrian imperial double-headed eagle above the printed inscription ”Fahnenweihe des Militär-Vet. Verein Neuda 22. Mai 1910,” bordered by a triangular pattern. The reverse carries a printed maker/retailer stamp reading ”Wien VII, Wechselstrasse 13.” Such badges were produced in large numbers for local veterans' association gatherings across the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the years before the First World War, commemorating the ceremonial blessing and presentation of a unit or club flag, a significant social and patriotic event for regional veterans' societies of the period. Militär-Veteranen-Vereine were locally organised associations of former soldiers that flourished throughout Cisleithanian Austria in the second half of the nineteenth century, providing mutual support, mustering for imperial anniversaries and funerals, and fostering loyalty to the Emperor and dynasty among former conscripts. A Fahnenweihe, the formal consecration of the association's flag, was among the most important events in such a club's calendar, typically involving a church blessing, parade, and festivities attended by neighbouring veterans' societies and local dignitaries. Commemorative badges like this one were sold or distributed to members and guests as souvenirs of the occasion, and today serve as modest but tangible evidence of the dense associational culture of small-town and village life in the late Habsburg Empire shortly before its collapse in the First World War.
