German WWII Wehrmacht 4-Year Long Service Medal - A circular medal in a light metal alloy inscribed ”Treue Dienste in der Wehrmacht” around an eagle grasping a wreathed swastika, with the numeral ”4” set within an oak leaf wreath surmounted by a crown on the opposite face. This medal was awarded to members of the German armed forces for four years of service, part of a graduated series of long-service decorations instituted in the 1930s recognizing continuous military duty. The Wehrmacht Long Service Award (Wehrmacht-Dienstauszeichnung) was instituted in 1936 to recognise years of loyal service within the German armed forces, forming a graduated series from four years up to twenty-five years, each tier distinguished by design and metal reflecting length of service. The four-year grade, awarded in this base-metal form, was the most commonly issued, reflecting the mass expansion of the Wehrmacht following the reintroduction of conscription in 1935. Such awards were granted administratively rather than for combat merit, recognising routine continuous duty rather than distinguished action.
