German Third Reich Sudetenland Commemorative Medal, 1. Oktober 1938 - A commemorative medal issued to mark the annexation of the Sudetenland, struck in a base metal with a bright yellow-gold finish. One face depicts two male figures in classical style, one raising a flag and the other extending an arm, standing above an eagle clutching a wreathed swastika. The reverse bears the inscription ”EIN VOLK, EIN REICH, EIN FÜHRER” encircling the date ”1. OKTOBER 1938,” with small swastikas flanking the text at top and bottom. This medal was awarded to commemorate the German annexation of the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia in October 1938, following the Munich Agreement. It was widely distributed to civilians, officials, and military personnel involved in the occupation, making it one of the more common Third Reich commemorative issues encountered today. The Sudetenland Medal was instituted in 1938 to commemorate the German annexation of the Sudeten regions of Czechoslovakia, carried out under the terms of the Munich Agreement signed by Germany, Britain, France, and Italy in September of that year. It was awarded broadly to military personnel, civil servants, and Nazi Party officials who took part in the occupation, and a bar reading ”PRAG” was later added for those who subsequently entered Prague in March 1939. The annexation marked a major step in German territorial expansion prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, and the medal was produced in large numbers, reflecting the scale of participation in the event.
