German WWII Faithful Service Decoration, 40-Year Cross (Treudienst-Ehrenzeichen) - A cross-form decoration in the gilt second class of the Faithful Service Decoration, with flared arms bordered by raised outlines and an oakleaf spray between the arms. One face bears a central square medallion with a black-enameled swastika, while the reverse square medallion is inscribed ”Für treue Dienste” in Gothic script. This award was instituted in 1938 to recognize twenty-five years of loyal service to the state, civil service, or private employers, forming part of a graduated series that also included 40-year and 50-year grades. The Faithful Service Decoration (Treudienst-Ehrenzeichen) was established by decree in 1938 to reward long, uninterrupted service by civil servants, state employees, and workers in private enterprise under the Nazi state, continuing a tradition of civil merit awards from the Weimar and Imperial eras. The 40-year grade, as represented here, sat at the upper end of the graduated series alongside 25- and 50-year crosses, and was typically awarded to older career officials, administrators, or long-serving workers rather than to military personnel. Such decorations reflect the regime's practice of using state honours to reinforce loyalty and continuity within the bureaucratic and industrial workforce.
