German Luftschutz (Air Protection) Service Medal, Dated 1938 - A circular award medal bearing the inscription ”FÜR VERDIENSTE IM LUFTSCHUTZ” (For Services in Air Protection) surrounding a central swastika, encircled by an oak leaf wreath. The reverse is similarly bordered by an oak wreath and bears the date ”1938” at center. The medal is suspended by an integral loop and is composed of a metal alloy believed to be a light-toned white metal. This award was issued to recognize service within the Luftschutz, the German civil air-defense organization established in the 1930s to organize air-raid precautions, civilian shelters, and firefighting for the general population ahead of and during the Second World War. The Luftschutz civilian air-defense award was established by the Nazi government in 1938 to recognize meritorious service in civil air protection, a field of growing importance as Germany prepared for the aerial warfare anticipated in a future European conflict. Recipients were typically volunteers and officials involved in organizing air-raid warnings, shelter construction, blackout enforcement, and firefighting training within the Reichsluftschutzbund (RLB), the mass civil-defense organization founded in 1933. The medal reflects the regime's broader effort to militarize civilian life and mobilize the population for the war it was preparing to wage.
