The War Merit Cross (Kriegsverdienstkreuz) was instituted by Adolf Hitler in October 1939 as the principal Third Reich award for wartime service and merit outside direct combat, recognising contributions in administration, industry, medical services, and civil defence, as well as some military support roles. The version with swords was awarded to military personnel and others whose service was rendered under conditions of danger at the front, distinguishing it from the swordless class given for merit away from combat zones. The 1st Class denoted a higher grade than the more commonly issued 2nd Class, typically awarded after prior receipt of the lower grade or for especially notable service. Maker marks on the reverse, often abbreviated codes, correspond to the numerous private firms contracted to produce these decorations throughout the war.
