German Nazi Party Antisemitic Propaganda Overprint on 1922 1000 Mark Reichsbanknote - German Nazi Party Antisemitic Propaganda Overprint on 1922 1000 Mark Reichsbanknote This lot is a 1922 German Reichsbanknote for 1000 Mark, issued by the Reichsbank in Berlin and dated 15 September 1922, overprinted on the reverse with National Socialist propaganda text and imagery. The overprint features the caricatured figure of a man alongside a Star of David marked with a skull, a hammer and sickle, and a Masonic square-and-compass symbol, above the slogan ”Judentum ist organisiertes Verbrechertum” (”Jewry is organized criminality”) and an exhortation to vote National Socialist (”Wählt Nationalsozialisten”). The original banknote retains its printed denomination, serial number, Reichsbank seals, and signatures. The 1922 1000 Mark note belongs to the mass-circulation currency issued during the hyperinflation crisis of the Weimar Republic, when the Reichsbank printed ever-larger denominations to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. Banknotes of this period were frequently reused by political movements as cheap, widely-seen surfaces for agitation, and the Nazi Party exploited them extensively from the early-to-mid 1920s onward to spread antisemitic conspiracy propaganda linking Jews, Freemasons, and communists as a unified internal enemy. Such overprints, produced and distributed by local NSDAP cells or sympathizers, were part of the party's early electoral propaganda efforts before it achieved national power, using existing state currency to give its message an appearance of ubiquity and legitimacy.
