Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark denomination in silver was first introduced in the Weimar era and continued production under the Nazi state, which from 1933 modified the design to incorporate Party symbolism, most notably the swastika beneath the eagle on later issues, while retaining the eagle motif inherited from earlier German coinage. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender throughout the Third Reich period, used in everyday commerce alongside lower denominations, and were withdrawn following Germany's defeat in 1945. They are commonly collected today as examples of state coinage adapted to political propaganda rather than as items of intrinsic rarity.
