Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark piece was one of Germany's largest silver circulating coins, minted in various types from the Weimar era into the Nazi period. From 1933 onward some designs were modified to include the swastika alongside the traditional Reichsadler and, in certain issues, portraits such as Hindenburg, reflecting the regime's gradual assertion of National Socialist symbolism over existing state institutions. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender in daily commerce throughout Germany until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945.
