Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark was a large-format silver coin first introduced in the Weimar Republic and continued under the Nazi state after 1933, when several commemorative and standard types were modified to incorporate the swastika alongside the traditional eagle and, in some issues, portraits such as Hindenburg. It circulated as ordinary legal tender in Germany throughout the 1930s and into the war years, used in everyday transactions by civilians and within the wartime economy. Silver 5-Reichsmark pieces were progressively withdrawn and melted as the regime's silver reserves were redirected to the war effort, making surviving examples a tangible link to the currency of daily life under National Socialist rule.
