Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark piece belonged to Germany's interwar and Nazi-era silver coinage, with denominations of this size first introduced under the Weimar Republic to provide a stable large-denomination coin during the recovery from hyperinflation. After 1933, various commemorative and standard types incorporated the swastika alongside the eagle and, on some issues, symbols such as the Potsdam Garrison Church associated with a 1934 issue marking the anniversary of the ”Day of Potsdam”. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender in daily transactions throughout the Third Reich until the state's defeat in 1945.
