Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark was a large silver coin denomination first introduced in the closing years of the Weimar Republic, providing a high-value circulating coin alongside Germany's paper currency. Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, later issues incorporated Party symbolism, such as the swastika beneath the eagle, replacing or supplementing earlier Weimar-era designs on some varieties while others retained commemorative motifs. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender throughout the Third Reich until the currency system collapsed with Germany's defeat in 1945, after which they were withdrawn during postwar currency reforms.
