Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination first introduced under the Weimar Republic and continued into the Nazi era, when several commemorative and standard types were struck bearing the state eagle, in some cases combined with the swastika after 1933–1934 to reflect the regime's assertion of continuity with, and control over, German state institutions. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender alongside propaganda and commemorative issues marking anniversaries such as the death of Paul von Hindenburg or the reintroduction of certain historic mint designs. Silver coinage of this type was progressively withdrawn and melted down as the war economy demanded metal reserves, making surviving circulated examples common relics of everyday civilian monetary use during the period.
