Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark piece was a large-format silver coin continuing a denomination first struck under the Weimar Republic, with designs commemorating figures such as Friedrich von Hindenburg or featuring the Reichsadler alongside a swastika after 1933–36 changes to state coinage. It circulated as ordinary legal tender throughout Germany during the Nazi period, used in everyday commerce alongside smaller denominations, rather than being a specially issued propaganda or award piece. Production ceased as the wartime economy shifted silver toward other uses, and such coins went out of circulation with Germany's defeat in 1945.
