Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark piece was one of the largest-denomination coins in circulation in Germany during the 1930s and early 1940s, struck in silver and continuing a format inherited from the Weimar Republic. From 1933 the Nazi state modified the design to include its own symbolism, such as the swastika incorporated alongside the eagle, a common practice of overlaying existing state institutions and currency with party iconography. These coins circulated as ordinary legal tender in daily commerce and were withdrawn only with the collapse of the regime in 1945.
