Third Reich Nazi 5 Reichsmark Silver Coin - German 5 Reichsmark Coin The 5 Reichsmark coin was a large silver denomination issued in Germany from the early 1930s through the Nazi period, continuing a coinage tradition established under the Weimar Republic. After 1933 the design was altered to incorporate National Socialist symbolism alongside the traditional eagle, reflecting the regime's practice of adapting existing state institutions and currency to its own iconography. Such coins remained in general circulation as legal tender until the collapse of the Third Reich in 1945. The 5 Reichsmark piece was Germany's largest circulating silver coin of the period, its designs including the Reichsadler and, from 1934, commemorative types such as the Potsdam Garrison Church issue marking the anniversary of Hindenburg and Hitler's 1933 ”Day of National Awakening” ceremony. Later Third Reich issues incorporated the swastika into the eagle motif, reflecting the regime's broader policy of overlaying existing state symbols and institutions with Nazi iconography. These coins circulated as ordinary currency alongside propaganda and commemorative functions until Germany's defeat in 1945.
