German Third Reich Newspaper ”Der Stürmer” – Vienna Edition, Folge 23, June 1934 - German Third Reich Newspaper ”Der Stürmer” – Vienna Edition, Folge 23, June 1934 This is an original issue of Der Stürmer, the weekly newspaper published by Julius Streicher, here printed as Folge 23 and dated Wien, 2. Juni 1934. The masthead banner reads ”Erkenne Deine Feinde!” (”Know Your Enemies”), and the front page leads with the article ”Die Ratsherren der jüdischen Minderheit, ” a piece attacking Jewish members of the Vienna city council, accompanied by an illustrated portrait of Dr. Jakob Ehrlich. Der Stürmer was among the most virulent propaganda organs of the Nazi movement, used to spread antisemitic conspiracy narratives to a mass working-class readership from its founding in 1923 through the collapse of the regime in 1945. This Vienna-dated issue, printed with pricing for distribution across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Romania, illustrates the publication's reach into German-speaking communities beyond the Reich's borders in the pre-Anschluss period. Surviving issues of this title are widely collected today as primary documents of Nazi-era propaganda and antisemitic rhetoric. Der Stürmer was a weekly newspaper founded by Julius Streicher in 1923 and published in Nuremberg throughout the Nazi era, functioning as a vehicle for virulent antisemitic propaganda, including caricatures by Philipp Rupprecht (”Fips”) that dehumanised Jewish people and helped prepare public opinion for escalating persecution. Its 1934 issues appeared during the early consolidation of Nazi rule, following the 1933 boycotts of Jewish businesses and preceding the Nuremberg Laws of 1935. Streicher was tried and convicted at the Nuremberg Trials for crimes against humanity, largely on the basis of the paper's role in inciting persecution and genocide, and was executed in 1946. Surviving copies are studied today as primary evidence of the propaganda apparatus underpinning the Holocaust.
