Classic Work. Chasdei Dovid. Leghorn, 1790. First edition.

  • Chasdei Dovid, section two, Seder Nezikin. The first expansive, fundamental commentary on the Tosefta. The noted work of Rav Dovid Pardo.

    • This is the most comprehensive commentary on the Tosefta, extolled by all the commentaries that followed.
    • In the Vilna edition, this commentary was printed together with the Tosefta, but in a summarized form that omitted most of the work.
    • Vowelized poem by the author on the last page.
    • Owner signature on title page.

Rav Dovid Pardo [1719-1790] was born in Venice. He was Rav in Spalato and then Sarajevo. He also substituted as the Chief Rabbi of the Jews of Belgrade. After 1782, he moved to Yerushalayim, where he was invited to serve on the beis din of Maharit Algazi. He helmed the Chesed L'Avraham and Binyan Shlomo yeshivos in Yerushalayim. He also authored: Maskil L'Dovid, Shoshanim L'Dovid, Michtam L'Dovid, Lamnatzeiach L'Dovid, Mizmor L'Dovid, and Chukas HaPesach.

In 1785, he traveled to Leghorn to print one of his works. There, he became friendly with the Chida who was in the city on the behalf of the Chevron Kollel, and discussed Talmud and Halachah with him. Later, in 1784, his youngest son, Rav Avraham, married Simcha, the Chida's daughter. When he was in Leghorn, he met the Maharit Algazi and Rav Yaakov Chazan and they gave him a haskamah for his work.
