Two letters from Rav Zvi Yehudah Edelstein, av"d Shumyachi and Ramat HaSharon, regarding the chinuch of his children and their move to Eretz Yisrael. Shumyachi [1932].
Rav Zvi Yehudah Edelstein, av"d Shumyachi and Ramat HaSharon, was the father of Rav Gershon Edelstein zt"l, Rosh Yeshivah of Ponevezh, and Rav Yaakov Edelstein zt"l, Rav of Ramat HaSharon.
In a letter dated 1932, he writes to his brother-in-law:
"Our heart is pained, but this winter passed, and by wonderful sons have grown up and are ready for chinuch b"h, and this is my biggest pain [worry], and my eyes are lifted to Hashem
that He help me raise them as we want."
The letter discusses permits to immigrate to Eretz Yisrael, and asks his brother-in-law to ask Rav Kook, Rav Aharonson, and other people to help him procure a certificate.
Rav Zvi Yehudah Edelstein av"d Shumyachi and Ramat HaSharon (1892-1951) was a prodigious talmid chacham and talmid of Rav Refael Shapiro of Volozhin and Rav Baruch Ber. The Steipler testified in the name of his brother-in-law, the Chazon Ish, that he was one of the five rabbanim in Eretz Yisrael that could be relied up on in halachic psak. His sons, the Gedolei HaDor of our generation, Rav Gershon and Rav Yaakov, wrote about their father's greatness in their introduction to
Hod Zvi.
The first letter is not signed and is apparently incomplete.
4 pages: 13x20 cm.
The second letter is a postcard with greetings for the new year, written in 1936, when he was rav of Ramat HaSharon.
